Industrial-temperature options covering -40 to +85 °C are now available across our 1G SFP, 10G SFP+ and 25G SFP28 lines, for 5G fronthaul, rail, power utility and outdoor cabinet deployments.
Commercial-grade transceivers are specified for 0 to 70 °C, which covers a climate-controlled equipment room comfortably and nothing else. Industrial-grade parts are built for -40 to +85 °C, and that range is now available across our 1G SFP, 10G SFP+ and 25G SFP28 lines.
Where industrial grade is genuinely required
- 5G fronthaul and outdoor cabinets — a sealed street cabinet in direct sun can exceed 70 °C internally even in a temperate climate. This is the most common reason to specify industrial.
- Rail and intelligent transport — trackside enclosures see the full seasonal range, and vibration is an additional consideration on top of temperature.
- Power utility and substation networks — often unconditioned, often remote, and rarely worth a truck roll for a module swap.
- Industrial Ethernet on the factory floor — not always cold, but frequently hot, dusty and poorly ventilated.
What changes in the module
The optical design is the same. What differs is component selection and qualification: wider-temperature lasers and drivers, a PCB and solder profile rated for the extended range, and burn-in across the full span rather than only at room temperature. The result is a part that costs more and is worth it when the alternative is a failure in a location that is expensive to reach.
What does not change
MSA compliance and the mechanical and electrical interface are unchanged, so an industrial-grade module drops into the same port as a commercial one. Diagnostics behave identically. If you are mixing grades in one network, label them clearly — from the outside, the two look the same, and that is exactly how industrial parts end up in the wrong cabinet.
Specifying it
When you send an enquiry, include the ambient range the equipment will actually see and whether the enclosure is sealed. That is enough for us to recommend commercial or industrial, and to flag it if the answer is genuinely borderline. Samples can be supplied for qualification on your own hardware.
